Postgraduate Research Scholarship at The School of Chemical Engineering: The Pyrometallurgy Research Laboratory (PYROSEARCH) at The University of Queensland has an international reputation for the high quality of research output. We are seeking enthusiastic researchers interested in cutting edge research in the field of high temperature process metallurgy applied to primary metal production and recycling.

Several opportunities are available across a range of topics and reaction systems involving experimental phase equilibria studies, chemical thermodynamic modelling and slag viscosity modelling. These projects are to be undertaken in collaboration with leading  metallurgical companies.

UQ is a research intensive University ranked well within the top 100 universities in the world. UQ Engineering is listed at 39 in the  Times Higher Education World University Rankings.

The Pyrometallurgy Research Laboratory undertakes fundamental and applied research, funded through competitive Government grants and by industry partners world-wide. There are excellent opportunities to establish Australian and international industry contacts, and careers in high temperature metal processing and recycling. Applications are invited for the following positions in this active, growing, award-winning Research Laboratory.

The role

Postgraduate Research Scholarships are available for studies leading to PhD degrees. Potential research topics include:

–  High temperature processes to recover metal values from complex copper ores and recycled materials. Research Partners: ARC Linkage, AngloAmerican Platinum (South Africa), Atlantic Copper (Spain), Aurubis (Germany), BHP Billiton Olympic Dam (Australia), Glencore PASAR(Philippines)/Kazzinc(Khazakstan)/Altonorte (Chile), Outotec(Finland), Umicore(Belgium).

–  Fundamental studies on phase equilibria and thermodynamics in support of the advanced lead production, recycling and refining; Partners ARC Linkage, Aurubis(Germany), Nyrstar(Australia), Outotec(Australia), Umicore(Belgium).

Scholarship applicants should have a good Honours or a Masters degree in metallurgical engineering or related discipline including but not limited to, chemical engineering, materials science, inorganic chemistry, earth science, physics and mathematics. You should also have a strong desire to develop a successful and highly-productive research career in metallurgical and recycling industry, good practical research skills, a strong methodological background and analytic skills, good writing abilities, and the capacity to work with multidisciplinary research teams.
