Scientific Programmer / Data Scientist in Biomedical Research in Bioinformatics, scientific computing at CeMM Research Center for Molecular Medicine of the Austrian Academy of Sciences
We are searching for a motivated candidate to join our computational biology team at the CeMM Research Center for Molecular Medicine of the Austria Academy of Sciences in Vienna. CeMM is an international and interdisciplinary research institute performing cutting edge science to elucidate the molecular basis of human disease. We use a broad range of computational approaches to mine large datasets derived from in-house post-genomic technologies, such as next-generation sequencing data of genomes, epigenomes and transcriptomes, high-throughput proteomics and chemical screening data. The candidate will be a key member of the newly established computational biology team led by Jörg Menche (www.tinyurl.com/joergmenche).
• Software development. Implementing and curating algorithms and analysis pipelines for data analysis.
• Data management. Developing databases and web applications to store, manipulate and visualize data.
• Training and outreach. Empowering life scientists to use computational methods.
We are looking for a highly motivated candidate who is as excited about connecting different scientific disciplines as we are. We expect strong programming skills and a degree (Bachelor, Master and/or PhD) in one of the quantitative sciences, for example computer science, physics, engineering, statistics, or biology/bioinformatics. A good understanding of biology and/or experience with biomedical data is a plus, but can also be learnt on the job. The working language at CeMM is English, and excellent writing and communication skills as well as high interpersonal skills are a must. We take career development of our staff seriously and will train the successful candidate in various state-of-the-art technologies that are in high demand in both academia and industry. We strongly believe in diversity and equal opportunity and would like to explicitly encourage women to engage in this area of science in which the gender bias is particularly evident. Tasks and pay are commensurable with experience and skills and follow the standards of the Austrian Science Fund (see: www.fwf.ac.at/en/research-funding/personnel-costs/).
The Institute (www.cemm.at)

We are committed to highest scientific standards as exemplified by recent publications in top journals including Nature, Science and Cell. The environment is very dynamic, interactive and international. CeMM is located in a new building at the center of Vienna’s Medical University campus, within walking distance of Vienna’s historical city center. According to a recent study by “The Scientist”, CeMM is among the top-5 best places to work in academia world-wide (http://the-scientist.com/2012/08/01/best-places-to-work-academia-2012). Vienna is frequently ranked the world’s best city to live in. It is a United Nations city with a large English-speaking community. The official language at CeMM is English, and more than 35 different nationalities are represented at the institute.
