The Innovation in Learning pathway is hosted by the Faculty of Wellbeing, Education and Language Studies (WELS), in partnership with the Open University’s Institute of Educational Technology (IET), which together form the Centre for Research in Education and Education Technology. It offers a cohesive research community with many opportunities for interdisciplinary, collaborative and participatory research. The Centre’s interests link closely to research expertise in the Oxford Internet Institute and the Learning and New Technologies Research Group at Oxford’s Department of Education, creating opportunities for co-supervision and shared events.

Areas of interest:

  • technology enhanced learning (learning analytics, innovation, openness)
  • technologies for inclusion (assistive technologies for disabled learners)
  • child-led research (e.g. digital storytelling)
  • creativity and technology
  • language and translation technologies
  • technologies for social and global justice

Eligibility

Full Award (covering tuition fees and living costs)

Full ESRC studentship support is normally available to students who meet the ESRC’s residential eligibility requirements.

  • Applicant must have “settled status” in the UK (meaning there are no restrictions on how long applicant can stay).
  • Applicant must have been ‘ordinarily resident’ in the UK for 3 years prior to the start of the studentship grant (means applicant must have been normally residing in the UK apart from temporary or occasional absences).
  • Applicant must not been residing in the UK wholly or mainly for the purpose of full-time education.

There are two main routes into and through this pathway:

  1. BA/BSc (Hons) First Class in Education Studies, Languages, Psychology, Philosophy, Computer Science or another appropriate discipline.+4, FT (4 years) or PT (6 years).
  2. MA/MSc with Distinction in Education Studies, Languages, Psychology, Philosophy, Computer Science or another appropriate discipline.+3, FT (3 years) or PT (6 years).

Applications:

Applications must include the following:

  • Cover letter outlining why the project is an important area of study, how your background relates to the proposed research topic and why you wish to study at the Open University.
  • All documents should be emailed directly to WELS-Student-enquiries@open.ac.uk.
  • An outline research proposal (max 2,000 words), covering research topic and methodology.
  • Academic CV that includes contact details of three referees, of whom at least two should be academic;
  • an Open University application form
