The IBM Ph.D. Fellowship Awards Program is an extremely competitive global program, which rewards outstanding Ph.D. students who are interested in solving problems that are important to IBM and fundamental to innovation in many academic disciplines and areas of study.

Study areas include:
  1. Computer Science & Engineering including cyber security, cloud, and mobile computing
  2. Electrical and Mechanical Engineering
  3. Physical Sciences including chemistry, material sciences, and physics
  4. Mathematical Sciences including analytics of massive scale data with uncertainty, operations research, and optimization
  5. Public Sector and Business Sciences including urban policy and analytics, social technologies, learning systems and Cognitive Computing
  6. Service Science
  7. Management, and Engineering (SSME)
  8. Industry Solutions- Healthcare, Life sciences, Education, Energy & Environment

IBM’s Research has following areas of focus:

  1. Technology that creates new business and social value
  2. Cognitive Computing research
  3. Cloud and distributed computing technology and solutions
  4. Fundamental science and technology

Duration: 01 (One) year

Nationality:

  • The Fellowships are awarded worldwide.
  • Fellows are awarded a stipend for one academic year.
  • Fellowships vary by country or geographic area, and the students will be informed at the time of the award what the value is for their country/geographic area.

Eligibility:

  • Applicant must be nominated by a doctoral faculty member and enrolled full-time in a college or university Ph.D. program.
  • The faculty member is encouraged to contact an IBM colleague prior to submitting the nomination to assure mutual interest.
  • Applicants from Europe and Russia may be nominated in their Ist year of study in their PhD program.
  • Applicants from outside Europe and Russia must have completed at least 01 year of study in their PhD program at the time of their nomination.
  • Applicants from United States embargoed (restricted) countries are not eligible for the program.
  • Successful candidates will be selected based on their overall potential for research excellence, the degree to which their technical interests align with those of IBM, and their academic progress to-date, as demonstrated by publications and certifications from their faculty advisor and department head.

Important note:

  • Nominations for the yearly Ph.D. Fellowship program begin in the third week of September and are accepted for 5 weeks.
  • Announcement of nominee status takes place in February of the following year.
