Number of Fellowships: Around 40 for the year 2018

The Bridge Fellowship Program aims at providing former JSPS fellows with an opportunity to:

  • revisit their past host institutions in Japan
  • to go to Japan to plan or implement joint research projects and seminars
  • to give lectures and training to young researchers
  • to attend scientific conferences and research meetings

The results of each BRIDGE visit are recorded in reports prepared by both the visiting researcher/host researcher and the nominating committee of each alumni association.

“BRIDGE Fellows” is the name given to researchers under this fellowship program.

Program Duration: Visit Period and Dates

  • A period of from 14 to 45 consecutive days
  • Revisits are to be between : 1st July 2018 through 31st March 2019

Award Value: The terms of the award indicated below are subject to change. The successful candidates would be provided with:

  • A round-trip air ticket (based on JSPS regulations)
  • Daily maintenance allowance of ¥15,000
  • Overseas travel insurance coverage
  • In order to cover cooperative research-related expenses a Research support allowance is also available. Application for the same can be made by the host researcher through his/her institution. This allowance may be applied for in an amount of up to ¥150,000.

Eligibility Criteria: To be eligible, a researcher must meet the following requirements.

  1. The applicant must be a researcher who is currently a regular member of an officially recognized JSPS alumni association and has done research in Japan under a JSPS program
  2. The applicant must sign the agreement by host researcher to all the 7 items of support in FormB(Agreement by Host Researcher)

Selection Process and Notification

  • Screening would be carried out using criteria devised by the alumni association in coordination with the JSPS office and approved by JSPS.
  • The screening criteria is to be included in the application guidelines issued by the alumni association/JSPS office.
  • Once the candidate is successful he/she would be sent an award letter from JSPS’s president along with accompanying documents.
  • Unsuccessful candidates are not notified of their selection results.
  • JSPS cannot respond to individual requests regarding selection results.
  • It should be noted that JSPS does not support research projects related to military affairs

Some of the Responsibilities of BRIDGE Fellows and Host Researchers are as follows:

  • Obtaining cooperation from their institution’s administrative office, host researchers are to provide facilities needed for visiting researchers to carry out their research activities during their stay in Japan.
  • Host researchers will be required to assist with immigration processing, securing domicile and other matters related to the fellow’s stay in Japan.
  • Host researchers cannot subject the visiting researchers to misbehavior (e.g., discrimination (racial or gender), harassment (sexual or academic), abuse of power, neglect), or language or treatment that could be construed as such, during their tenures.
  • Any kind of misbehavior (e.g., discrimination (racial or gender), harassment (sexual or academic), abuse of power, neglect) either in or outside the host institution during the tenures by the Visiting researchers would not be accepted at all.
  • Fellows are required to submit a post-visit report using “RESEARCH REPORT” (Form 7) to JSPS and the alumni association/JSPS office within 1 month after the end of their visits.
  • While giving lectures and other presentations in Japan the Fellows would be required to mention that they are invited under the BRIDGE Fellowship Program.
  • Fellows are obligated during their tenures to concentrate on creating, sustaining and/or strengthening research and academic networks related to this fellowship program.
  • During their tenures, Fellows are not supposed to engage in other activities irrespective of whether they are paid or non-paid activities.

Other Details:

  • A researcher cannot be a candidate for both this fellowship program and another JSPS program at the same time.
  • BRIDGE Fellowship and a fellowship from another funding organization at the same time cannot be awarded to a candidate
  • Incomplete or faulty applications will not be reviewed.
  • Applicants are to describe the results they obtained in other JSPS program(s) and their relevance to this BRIDGE fellowship program.
  • There is a limit of one application per person under each recruitment. This should be confirmed when a researcher applies who belongs to 2 or more alumni associations.
