The mission of the International Agency for Research on Cancer is to aid in reducing the global burden of cancer through research and knowledge building that can be translated into applications that reach populations and help control the disease. Accordingly, IARC conducts research on a wide range of topics related to cancer control and is especially focused on cancer etiology, biology, epidemiology, prevention, and early detection.One of the strategic activities of the Prevention and Implementation Group (PRI) is the development of implementation research within standard studies as well as an independent field of research for cancer prevention and early detection.
The main purpose of implementation research is to help reduce the gap between scientific evidence for cancer control interventions and current practices, particularly in low and middle income countries. In this context, PRI is working in collaboration with four (4) Latin American countries and it is expected to reach at least three (3) additional countries, to evaluate alternatives for cervical cancer screening using HPV tests as the primary tool (the ESTAMPA study).
The project is aimed at recruiting 50.000 women and it has clinical and implementation components aimed at helping low and middle income countries to move forward in the introduction of new available technologies for cervical cancer early detection.
A postdoctoral opportunity is available to participate in the implementation component of the project which is fundamental to investigate socio-cultural and organizational barriers for HPV screening in these settings. It will include epidemiological and public health analyses along with their interaction with clinical interventions.
Expected activities for the post-doctoral position are:
– Literature search, review, and compilation
– Data gathering from routine sources within countries
– Participation in field work activities, including monitoring and data management
– Participation in writing project reports
– Participation in academic seminars and conferences
– Data management and analysis
– Writing scientific papers on the field of implementation science for cancer control
The postdoctoral opportunity will be available for 12 months with a possibility of a 12-month extension. The researcher will be based in Lyon, France. Duty travels in relevant Latin American countries may be planned.
