The Applied Physics Branch at Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) is looking for a qualified Post-Doctoral Fellow to perform innovative and advanced research and development (R&D) in novel technology concepts.The intention of this work is to broaden the scope of CNL’s expertise and technology base, with concepts inspired by research conducted at the forefront of condensed matter physics, particle physics, nuclear physics, and atomic, molecular and optical physics. It should also provide leverage for collaboration with other research institutions within and outside of Canada.
The work will feed later-stage research and development in support of non-proliferation and nuclear counter-terrorism. Further, this work will grow CNL reputation for scientific excellence, while also maintaining CNL’s cutting-edge instrumentation and software tooling. Work could involve, but is not limited to:
1) Exploration of novel, tabletop neutron sources.
2) Exploration of novel techniques for delayed neutron spectroscopy.
3) Exploration of novel, sensitive radiation detection schemes.
The Post Doctoral Fellow will work directly with a research team led by a subject matter expert, who will act as a mentor overseeing the research, monitoring progress, and providing guidance. Research topics will be established jointly between the candidates and the mentors. The candidates are encouraged to submit their innovative research ideas for a specific topic for consideration. Successful candidates are expected to both document their research findings in CNL internal reports and publish in peer-reviewed journals.
Qualifications:
Candidates must have a Ph.D. degree within last 2 years from a recognized university and demonstrated proficiency in their field. The candidates should include a list of conference and journal publications and any scholarships and awards received.
The ideal candidate will have:
1) A Ph.D. from a recognized university in one of the following areas: Reactor Physics, Engineering Physics, Physics, Materials Science, Nuclear Engineering, or Electrical Engineering.
2) Experience in detector development and experimental physics measurements
b) Ability to perform work carefully and accurately.
c) Good analytical, documentation and communication skills.
d) Experience and knowledge in experimental physics, particularly experimental reactor physics and nuclear physics is an advantage.
e) Experience in nuclear measurement techniques and instrumentation control would be an asset.
3) Ability to handle complex physics problems, and the willingness to learn new technical skills on a continuous basis.
4) Ability to articulate ideas and proposals for new projects and ongoing work.
About the Position:
It is based at Chalk River Laboratories, Ontario, Canada.
The appointment is for two years, with the possibility of extending to a third year.
Honorarium of $55,000 per annum paid in installments (statutory deductions must be made).
4% of the paid annual honorarium in lieu of benefits.
Conditional upon managerial approval, PDFs are eligible to the initial relocation allowance in accordance with CNL guidelines.
