For the past 100 years, UWA has contributed significantly to the intellectual, cultural and economic development of the State of Western Australia and the nation as a whole.
The CMCA is the Western Australian node of the Australian Microscopy & Microanalysis Research Facility, and of the National Imaging Facility, national infrastructure networks of Australian university-based characterisation facilities providing premium analytical capabilities and high-end research support to local, national and international scientists (www.ammrf.org.au and www.anif.org.au). The CMCA hosts a diverse range of analytical capabilities and characterisation techniques, from flow cytometry, preclinical imaging (including MRI) and laser-confocal microscopy, to SEM, TEM and ion probe platforms.
The CMCA’s Nuclear Magnetic Resonance facilities comprise: a 600MHz spectrometer upgraded to a Bruker Avance III HD system in December 2014; a Bruker Avance III HD 500MHz spectrometer installed in early 2015; a Varian/Agilent 400MHz spectrometer equipped with solid state capabilities; and a Varian/Agilent 300MHz spectrometer.
The School of Chemistry & Biochemistry is a comprehensive research-intensive school that spans the broad disciplines of chemistry, biochemistry and molecular biology, and genetics, and is responsible for the BSc majors that fit within its broad discipline base. The iconic Bayliss Building on the Crawley campus houses the School, as well as the CMCA’s NMR, X-ray diffraction, and mass spectrometry facilities.
A highly motivated, self-guided academic is required to manage the NMR facility in the Bayliss Building. Duties extend from supervision of the maintenance and operation of the four NMR spectrometers and training users of the facility, to undertaking research projects involving NMR spectroscopy. The position supervises a Senior Research Officer involved in the day-to-day operation of the facility. The appointee will provide leadership and expertise to academic staff and research students in all areas of NMR spectroscopy, including spectrometer operation, data acquisition and analysis. The appointee will also engage in the teaching and demonstration of NMR spectroscopy to undergraduate and postgraduate students. Through this joint appointment, we are seeking a person with a strong work ethic, a practical approach and who is passionate about delivering the highest quality research and teaching outcomes.
To be considered for this role, you will demonstrate:
- PhD in chemistry or allied science;
- Knowledge and experience in Nuclear Magnetic Resonance spectroscopy;
- Ability to carry out independent research, and willingness to participate in collaborative research;
- Ability and willingness to direct and maintain a multi-user NMR facility;
- Ability to work in an interdisciplinary environment; and
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
