The College of Science, Engineering and Food Science at University College Cork (UCC) is inviting applications for two PhD positions in Developing Economic Solutions for On-farm Anaerobic Digestion.

About the project:
  • The aim of the project is to find the most efficient biomethane production scenarios, most importantly that are cost-effective, in transitioning to a low carbon economy.
  • The PhD research project will look into opportunities for enhancing on-farm digestion efficiency; increasing biomethane conversion; optimising the logistics of on farm anaerobic digestion and techno-economic analysis of the most favourable pathways.
  • The PhD student will work under the supervision of the MaREI Bioenergy and Biofuels Research Group (Prof Jerry Murphy, Dr David Wall, Dr Richen Lin and Dr Richard O’Shea).
  • The work is funded by through the Science Foundation Ireland MaREI centre for Climate, Energy and Marine. The positions will be based in the Environmental Research Institute (ERI), which is a flagship institute in University College Cork (UCC).

Requirements:

  • Applicant must hold minimum first-class honours degree (or equivalent) in engineering or a similar discipline
  • Applicant must demonstrate a record of peer-reviewed journal publications (not essential though).
  • Laboratory experiences and technical competence and accomplishment
  • Capability of working within a project team to achieve results and good communication, organisation and interpersonal skills
  • Applicants whose first language is not English must show evidence of English proficiency (e.g. IELTS minimum 6.5, individual sections 6.0).

Remuneration: €18,500 stipend per annum.

Duration: 3 years

Starting date: no later than 1st April 2020
