Johannes Gutenberg University invites applications for 5 Doctoral positions. The positions are available in the interdisciplinary Research Training Group 1876 “Early Concepts of Man and Nature: Universal, Local, Borrowed” established by the German Research Foundation.

Starting Date: 1 October 2017

Duration: initially for 2 years; may be extended by one more year

  • Ancient Near Eastern Studies
  • Pre- and Proto-historical Archaeology (Pleistocene Archaeology)
  • Near Eastern Archaeology
  • Classical Archaeology
  • Classics (Greek and Latin)
  • Byzantine Studies and Medieval German Studies

Research areas (Topics for PhD theses must be chosen from one of these):

  • Primordial conditions and elements, the origin and the end of the world;
  • Natural phenomena, the forces of nature, and natural catastrophes;
  • Flora, fauna, and natural environment;
  • The conceptualization of the human body, of disease, healing and death.

Requirements:

  • Applicant must hold diploma or master’s degree (or equivalent) with excellent results in related disciplines and fulfill the necessary requirements for studying for a doctoral degree at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz

  • an disclosure for a PhD thesis in one of the areas of the Research Training Group, summarizing the idea, outlining research questions and state of the art, approach and methods to be used, work and time schedule (4 pages)
  • 2 letters of reference from members of academic staff
  • List of attended conferences and publications (if available)
