Johannes Gutenberg University invites applications for 5 Doctoral positions. The positions are available in the interdisciplinary Research Training Group 1876 “Early Concepts of Man and Nature: Universal, Local, Borrowed” established by the German Research Foundation.
Starting Date: 1 October 2017
Duration: initially for 2 years; may be extended by one more year

- Egyptology
- Ancient Near Eastern Studies
- Pre- and Proto-historical Archaeology (Pleistocene Archaeology)
- Near Eastern Archaeology
- Classical Archaeology
- Classics (Greek and Latin)
- Byzantine Studies and Medieval German Studies
Research areas (Topics for PhD theses must be chosen from one of these):
- Primordial conditions and elements, the origin and the end of the world;
- Natural phenomena, the forces of nature, and natural catastrophes;
- Flora, fauna, and natural environment;
- The conceptualization of the human body, of disease, healing and death.
Requirements:
- Applicant must hold diploma or master’s degree (or equivalent) with excellent results in related disciplines and fulfill the necessary requirements for studying for a doctoral degree at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz
