Analytical Chemist for Renewable Fuels and Sustainable Transportation USA
The Applied Catalysis and Emissions Research Group in the Energy and Transportation Sciences Division is seeking to hire a nationally recognized expert in analytical chemistry to perform research on renewable fuels and sustainable transportation.
In this position you will conduct research at ORNL’s National Transportation Research Center where we have a state-of-the-art analytical chemistry lab that supports transportation research programs.
You will have the opportunity to collaborate with teams with diverse staff across ORNL as well as researchers at other national labs, industry, and universities.
In this position you will address research challenges in production and utilization of renewable fuels including:
- chemical characterization of renewable fuels from biochemical and thermochemical processing of biomass, plastics, and municipal waste,
- understanding of fuel chemistry changes from catalytic upgrading of chemicals to fungible fuels for transportation,
- characterization of the compatibility of fuels with infrastructure materials including metals and polymers,
- detailed speciation of exhaust chemistry from renewable fuels used in advanced combustion engines including aldehydes and other mobile source air toxics, and
- characterization of exhaust chemistry conversion by catalytic and filtration emission control technologies. All of these research areas support the overall goal of clean sustainable transportation for U.S. energy security. In addition, the role will also include a diverse range of opportunities to perform research in CO2 capture/conversion/utilization/storage, plastics upcycling, and many other chemical processes related to clean energy.
Responsibilities
- Conduct pioneering research in analytical chemistry to address challenges for renewable fuel production and utilization for clean and sustainable transportation
- Lead projects and tasks in a dynamic research environment with diverse technical teams
- Present and report research results in high-impact peer reviewed journals, conferences and project reviews
- Write and submit research and development proposals
Qualifications Required
- A M.S. or PhD in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or an equivalent discipline with a minimum of 7 years’ experience in analytical chemistry
- Hands-on experience in qualitative and quantitative analytical techniques such as gas and liquid chromatography, mass spectrometry, capillary electrophoresis, and optical spectroscopy
- Experience with both method development and performing standard analytical techniques
- A record of excellence in analytical chemistry as evidenced through peer-reviewed journal publications, patents, industry impact, and/or professional society participation
