Max Planck Institute for the Science of Human History and the Department of Archaeology offers PhD and post doctorate opportunities in a variety of areas. The Department of Archaeology undertakes both field and laboratory research, and offers the opportunity to conduct cutting edge research in a dynamic and multidisciplinary environment. We offer research positions for PhD students and postdoctoral researchers on a variety of topics.

Study areas for PhD and postdoctoral researchers (Archaeology)  are:

  • Island Southeast Asian archaeology
  • Central Asian archaeobotany
  • African archaeobotany
  • Ceramic residue analysis
  • ZooMS (Zooarchaeology by Mass Spectrometry)
  • Late Pleistocene archaeology
  • Stable isotope analysis
  • Other Topics; applicants are welcome to suggest your own topic of interest, provided this fits with the Department’s core interests and themes.

Qualification:

For PhD positions:

  • Applicant must have or expect to receive Master’s degree or qualification equivalent to the German diploma (essential)
  • Applicant must provide an excellent research proposal

For postdoctoral position:

  • Applicant must have or expect to receive PhD degree
  • Applicant must possess a proven record of publication in international, peer-reviewed journals
  • Applicant must possess relevant research experience
  • Applicant must provide an excellent research proposal
