The Department of Agricultural, Food, and Nutritional Science in the Faculty of Agricultural, Life and Environmental Science is looking for one full-time Postdoc Fellow to work with Dr. Ben Willing (Principle Investigator)

Funding: The position is part of the NSERC Alliance and Alberta Innovates CASBE funded project “Identifying Key Microorganisms and Factors to Develop Improved Spontaneous and Mixed Fermentation Beer” which is being carried out in collaboration with Blind Enthusiasm Brewing Company in Edmonton, Alberta.

Research Area: The candidate will be responsible for performing bioinformatic analyses of metagenomic, metatranscriptomic, and metabolomic data obtained from spontaneous and mixed fermentation beer samples, and work with collaborators to identify key determining factors in the final quality of these beers.

Fellowship: This appointment will have a starting wage of $45,000.00 CAN per annum and will be for a 02-year term which includes a benefits package.

Responsibilities / Duties:

  1. Perform a range of bioinformatic analyses with reproducible results
  2. Responsible for qualitative and statistical analysis of research data and communicating this information to the PI
  3. Develops and performs bioinformatics experiments/analyses, troubleshoots experimental protocols, and adjusts methodology to attain desired results
  4. Present research results at laboratory meetings, scientific conferences and other related events
  5. Prepare abstracts, research reports, and presentations under the direction of the PI
  6. Providing guidance, training, and oversight of Summer students and graduate students

Essential Qualifications:

  1. Ph.D. degree in Bioinformatics, Computer Science
  2. Proficient understanding and use of bioinformatics tools to analyze microbiome datasets, including metagenomics, transcriptomics, and metabolomics
  3. Ability to form and investigate their own hypothesis based on initial results
  4. Ability to collaborate and work in a team
  5. Strong verbal and written skills for effective presentation and manuscript preparation
  6. Excellent interpersonal, communication, and writing skills

Desirable Qualifications

  1. In-depth knowledge of microbial ecology, especially in food fermentation
  2. Experience with metabolic modeling and integrating multivariate data from multiple sources (metagenomic metabolomic, metatranscriptomic)
  3. Strong publication record in a relevant field
