Applications are asked from qualified applicants for a Doctoral position (PhD) (chemistry and biomedical engineering) at the National University of Ireland (NUI), Galway. This position represents a collaborative research project between the Science Foundation Ireland, Centre for Research in Medical Devices (CÚRAM) at the National University of Ireland, Galway and the AO Foundation. This Doctoral position is available from December 2016 for four year (48 months).
The successful applicant will work on the project which focus to develop bioadhesive formulations based on hyaluronan conjugates. The successful applicant will synthesise, characterize hyaluronan conjugates bearing chemical groups able to bind to tissue (e.g. hydroxyphenols).
The successful applicant will evaluate the adhesion of hyaluronan conjugates formulations to biological tissue and their biocompatibility. The scholarship will cover fees and a monthly stipend.
Requirements:
The ideal applicants should hold a Masters’ degree (MSc) in chemistry, biomedical engineering, or a closely related material science based subject area.
Experience in one or more of the following would be advantageous, but is not essential as full training will be provided: adhesion and biomechanics, polymer synthesis, modification and characterizations.
Applicants must be highly motivated and passionate about developing new products and have strong analytical skills and strong oral and interpersonal skills. Fluency in written and spoken English are essential.
