Council of Canadian Academies (CCA) Internship Program 1901 views

The Council of Canadian Academies (CCA) is a not-for-profit organization that convenes the best experts in their respective fields to assess the evidence on complex scientific topics of public interest to inform decision-making in Canada. The CCA is offering an Internship Program, intended for recent graduates with a graduate or professional degree who have an interest in the use evidence for public policy.

About the program:
  • The program provides an opportunity for successful applicants to work at the interface of science and public policy while developing a network of contacts beyond academia that will serve them well into the future.
  • Research interns engage directly in the CCA’s assessment process and gain experience interacting with experts at panel meetings, carrying out research and writing in support of assessments, and helping to bring reports through production.
  • Assigned projects will be in one of the many subject areas of CCA’s current assessments, including health, energy, environment and climate change, science and technology policy, and economics.
  • The start date is January 10, 2022.

Eligibility:

  • The internship is an opportunity to acquire professional non-academic work experience.
  • Individuals who have completed a graduate or professional degree are eligible to apply.
  • Applicant must hold degree in natural, social or health sciences; law; engineering; or the humanities.
  • French language proficiency is an asset; however, day-to-day work at the CCA is conducted in English.

Duration: The internship program is a full-time commitment of six months and will be a remote opportunity due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

  • Applications and letters of reference should be addressed to Anita Melnyk at internship@cca-reports.ca. Candidates may submit all application materials in English or French, excluding the writing sample which must be in English. A complete application includes the following:
  • A cover letter
  • An up-to-date CV
  • A writing sample of 500 words or less to assess a candidate’s ability to communicate effectively and take a multidisciplinary view of a public policy issue
  • What is the relevance to public policy in Canada and what types of evidence would be required to answer the following question: “What are the socio-economic impacts of science and health misinformation and disinformation on the public and public policy in Canada?”
  • A minimum of two letters of references. Referees should address the following: Relationship to the candidate; Candidate’s strongest assets; Areas to strive for improvement; Communications skills (oral and written); Linguistic capacity (French and English) where relevant.
