CSTPV Visiting Scholarship Programme: CSTPV Visiting Scholarship Programme

CSTPV stands for The Handa Centre for the Study of Terrorism and Political Violence. Every year it offers Visiting Scholars Programme for international students interested.

The Handa Centre for the Study of Terrorism and Political Violence (CSTPV) is dedicated to the study of the:

  • causes
  • dynamics
  • characteristics and
  • consequences of terrorism and
  • related forms of political violence

it was founded in 1994. It is Europe’s oldest for the study of terrorism. CSTPV has been able to expand its research and teaching work as the result of a generous recent donation from the Worldwide Support for Development (WSD), chaired by Japanese philanthropist Dr Haruhisa Handa.

Level of study: Visiting scholarship program

Subject Area: political violence in social sciences, including history.

Scholarship Details: 

  • Handa CSTPV does not provide funding for Visiting Scholars. They are expected to have their own source of funding such as:
  1. sabbatical salary
  2. personal funds
  3. grants from their home governments or
  4. other private organisations
  • The Handa CSTPV can neither provide office space at the School of International Relations nor a university email account.
  • Visiting Scholars will be given access to the Library of the University of St Andrews.

Nationality: open for all nationalities

Eligibility Criteria: 

  • The applying candidates must pursue an independent project on political violence in social sciences, including history.
  • The candidate must have a good command over both written and spoken English.
  • Preference will be given to those scholars who share research interests with CSTPV staff.
  • Post-doctoral candidates and established scholars are particularly encouraged to apply, but applications from doctoral students will also be considered.
  • Candidates are asked to indicate the desired length of their stay at CSTPV when applying.

Duration: Visiting Fellowships will not normally be awarded for more than one year.

How to Apply: The mode of application is online. Applicants should submit the following documents in PDF format to gm39@st-andrews.ac.uk

Documents required:

  • A Cover Letter
  • A detailed CV containing a list of publications. It can be a maximum of 10 pages.
  • It should indicate the research and teaching interests and experience as well as the career plans.
  • Doctoral students need to provide the names of 2–3 academic referees who may be willing to provide a reference on behalf of the applicant.
  • Academic career statement of not more than 1 page.
  • The statement should clearly mention why the candidate thinks that the visiting scholars programme will be beneficial for him/her.
  • Research proposal of not more than 1 page. The proposal must be clear and well structured, with well-defined and realistic goals that can be achieved within the duration of the fellowship.
  • The applicant may additionally indicate if he/she thinks that the research will fit with the research interests of members of the Handa CSTPV.

Applications Deadline: 

  • 1st October for fellowships starting in February and
  • 1st March for fellowships starting in September
