The James Madison Memorial Fellowship Foundation offers grants to the individuals desiring to become exceptional teachers of the American Constitution at the secondary school level.

Here candidates compete only against their counterparts from their states only. The Foundation policy is to offer only one fellowship/ state/year.

 Subject areas:

  1. Master of Arts (MA)- American history, political science
  2. Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT)- American Constitutional history,  American government, political institutions, and political theory.
  3. Master of Education (M.Ed) or the Master of Arts or Master of Science in Education with a focus in American history or American government, political institutions, and political theory

Eligibility:

To be eligible for this fellowship, applicant must:

  • Be a legal residence of U.S.A.
  • Bachelor’s degree holder or receive a bachelor’s degree not later than 31 August of the year in which you want to apply.
  • A teacher or want to become a teacher (American history, American government, or social studies).

 Teaching Obligation

After receiving the master’s degree, each successful candidate shall teach the above mentioned subjects in their state (from which the recipient won the fellowship). The term is minimum one year.

Types of Fellowships

The Foundation offers two types of fellowships:

  • Junior Fellowships are awarded to exceptional college seniors and college graduates with no teaching experience who aim to become secondary school teachers. Junior Fellows are anticipated to complete graduate study within 2 academic years of full-time study.
  • Senior Fellowships are awarded to excellent current teachers who shall compulsorily complete graduate study within 5 years of part-time study.
