The John Carter Brown Library awards approximately 40 residential research fellowships for the year June 2017–June 2018. John Carter Brown Library offers Short-Term Fellowships & Long-Term Fellowships.

  • Colonial history of the Americas North and South, including all aspects of the European, African, and Native American engagement.

Short-Term Fellowships

  • These fellowships are open to scholars who are engaged in pre- and post-doctoral, or independent research, irrespective of nationality.
  • Graduate students must have passed their preliminary or general examinations at the time of application.
  • Duration: 2-4 months
  • Stipend: $2,100/month

Long-Term Fellowships

  • Theses fellowships are funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), an independent agency of the U.S. Federal government.
  • Fellowships funded by the NEH are only available to the US nationals or to those applicants residing in the U.S. for 3 years preceding application.
  • Applicants of all nationalities, however, will be considered for long-term fellowships.
  • Duration: 5-10 months
  • Stipend: $4,200/month

Applications:

  1. Description of the proposed project, with an explanation of its historiographical significance, progress to date on the project, identification of specific materials to be consulted at the JCB, and plan for work to be completed while in residence.
  2. Applicants may submit proposals in English, French, Spanish, or Portuguese (although English is generally preferred by the committee when possible).
