The Department of Chemistry at University of York is part of an Innovative Training Network and European Joint Doctorate funded by the European Commission through the Marie Sklowdoska-Curie Action, entitled “Coordination Chemistry Inspires Molecular Catalysis” (CCIMC).

About the position:

• This vacancy offers a 3 year, fully-funded double PhD award under the topic “Polar substrates asymmetric hydrogenation and associated processes: role of the base” (Ref ESR8) in collaboration with the Laboratory of Coordination Chemistry (Toulouse).
• The research project aims to develop a detailed understanding of metal-catalysed transfer hydrogenation reactions and to develop predictive tools for ligand design and optimisation in these systems. This will involve the synthesis of novel ligands, catalyst testing and mechanistic studies using advanced NMR spectroscopic and computational techniques.

Tasks and duties:

• To provide support to the research project, undertaking research work within the overall programme and assisting with the day to day operation of the project
• To work closely with project supervisors to prepare work for dissemination, presenting preliminary findings at meetings within the research groups as appropriate.
• To assist in writing articles, papers, reports or books as appropriate.
• To participate in the dissemination of research findings internally and externally at seminars, workshops and conferences.
• To undertake a programme of learning and development, in the form of a PhD , as an integral part of the role

Requirements:

• Applicant must be in the first four years (full-time equivalent research experience) of your research career and have not been awarded a doctoral degree
• Applicant must not have resided or carried out your main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the UK for more than 12 months in the preceding 3 years
• Applicant must hold Master’s degree in Chemistry, plus a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry (minimum 2:1 or equivalent grade)
• Applicants who do not have English as their first language will need to meet or exceed the requirements for Chemistry PhD entry.
• Broad knowledge and experience of Chemistry and of synthetic and analytical techniques and understanding of relevant health and safety practices
• Ability to undertake academic research, organise own research activities to agreed deadlines and quality standards
• Excellent IT and oral and written communication skills
• Ability to provide support to staff and students and work as part of a team and independently using own initiative
• Commitment to and enthusiasm for travel and studying overseas for long periods of time and in a variety of organisations
• Interest in and enthusiasm for organometallic chemistry and catalysis
