Material Synthesis, Manufacturing process: Forschungszentrum Jülich

PhD student for the production and analysis of modified electrolyte materials for lithium-ion batteries at the Forschungszentrum Jülich, Germany

Time Span: 01 Oct 2018 for 3 years

Reference: 2018-270

Field of Research: Material Synthesis and Manufacturing process: Mathematics / Natural Sciences, Engineering

Overview

Institute of Energy and Climate Research – Materials Synthesis and Manufacturing Process provides a dynamic and international working environment. The lab develop materials and components for advanced energy converters and high performance storage devices (specially oxide ceramic fuel cells, solid state batteries, thermal barrier coatings for gas turbines & gas separation membranes).

The focus is on inorganic materials that are processed as functional layers of powders or via the gas phase.

Major Research Interests:

Batteries for stationary energy storage and automotive applications will play an important role in the future. A major requirement for the development of future generations of batteries is the proper combination of electrode materials and electrolytes. The main goals of research and development are to increase the energy density as well as the lifetime of the batteries.

Main tasks:

1. Development and optimization of materials for lithium batteries
2. Optimization of material systems with regard to conductivity and ceramic processing capability by using various wet-chemical synthesis routes (sol-gel, solvothermal, precipitation reactions)
3. Analysis of material systems with a wide range of analysis methods (eg X-ray diffractometry, light and electron microscopy (SEM), secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS), optical emission spectroscopy (OES), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS))

Fellowship:  Remuneration analogous to salary group 13 (50%) of the collective agreement of the civil service.

Requirements

  1. Academic science degree in engineering, mineralogy, materials science, chemistry, physics or a comparable field of study
  2. Funded materials science and scientific knowledge
  3. Experience in wet chemical preparation and analysis of ceramic materials
  4. Good knowledge in electrochemistry and solid-state
  5. Chemistry -Funded knowledge of English in words and Writing, knowledge of German desirable
  6. Inspective ability to cooperate with internal and external project partners
  7. High flexibility and great commitment
  8. Structured and independent way of working
