NATO’s Science for Peace and Security (SPS) Programme is a policy tool that improves cooperation and dialogue with all partners, based on scientific research, innovation, and knowledge exchange. The SPS Programme offers funding, expert advice, and support to security-relevant activities conjointly developed by a NATO member and partner country.

About the program:

  • Science for Peace and Security (SPS) Programme makes available funding, expert advice, and support to security-relevant activities together developed by a NATO member and partner country.
  • It improves cooperation and dialogue with all partners, based on scientific research, innovation, and knowledge exchange.
  • Over the last 5 years the programme has started 450 collaborative activities in more than 40 partner countries from cyber security in Jordan to defense against CBRN agents and energy security in Ukraine.
  • The Program backs collaboration through 3 proven grant mechanisms: multi-year research projects, workshops, and training courses.
  • Interested applicants must develop proposals for activities that fit within one of these formats.
  • This program is a partnership program; applications for funding must be submitted jointly by a NATO and a partner country Co-Director.

  • Applications for funding must be sent to: applications@hq.nato.int
  • There is normally 2-3 peer review assessment panels held each year, with deadlines for application submissions corresponding to their scheduling.

As a decision on funding can take up to 9 months following an application last date, it is important to take this into consideration when proposing dates for an activity.
