Ph.D. Fellowship (Biomolecular Systems): DTU Chemistry
Ph.D. Fellowship in Computational Spectroscopy of Biomolecular Systems at the Technical University Of Denmark (DTU).
A 03-year Ph.D. scholarship in computational spectroscopy of biomolecular systems is available with Assistant Professor Jógvan Magnus Haugaard Olsen.
Funding: The position is funded through a Villum Young Investigator grant. Starting date is 1 January 2022.
Description
Research Theme
- The research in the group is focused on the development and application of multiscale and fragmentation methods to study large and complex systems.
- Primarily simulating linear and non-linear spectroscopic processes in biologically relevant systems.
- Analysis and interpretation of experimental spectroscopic studies of biomolecular systems can be very challenging due to the complexity of the biological matter and/or the use of advanced spectroscopic techniques.
- Development of a computational methodology that will make it possible to simulate a wide range of spectroscopic techniques applied to large and complex biomolecular systems (proteins, cell membranes, and nucleic acids).
- Methods will be based on quantum-classical embedding methods aimed at electronic-structure calculations of spectroscopic properties.
Required Qualifications
- Hold a two-year master’s degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master’s degree.
- Candidates with a background in theoretical and computational chemistry are preferred and programming skills (e.g., Fortran/C/C++ and Python) are desirable.
Tasks Involved
- Carry out independent scientific research within the area (written dissertation and public defense of your Ph.D. work).
- The Ph.D. project involves theoretical derivations of methodology and its implementation in computer code.
- Apply the methods to relevant biochemical and biophysical problems.
- The Ph.D. program also consists of coursework corresponding to 30 ECTS, teaching and dissemination activities corresponding to approximately 3 months, and external research stays.
