The Laboratory of Soil Mechanics (LMS) focuses its research activities in the field of geotechnical engineering with a focus on the protection from geohazards and industrial damage to the environment, landforms and structures.
In addition to the conventional topics such as soil-structure interactions, slope stability and foundation design, our experimental and modelling resources are mobilised to understand, describe and predict the environmental impact of the technologies of future days (bio-improved soils, nuclear waste disposal, CO2 geological sequestration, and energy technologies related to heat storage and extraction).
A PhD in the field of geotechnical engineering. PhD candidate will carry out research on one of the LMS investigation fields: bio-improved soils, Energy geostructures, landslide analysis, soil-structure interaction, behavior of shales, nuclear waste storage and CO2 storage.
These topics involve geotechnical modeling as well as experimental testing of geomaterials. The field of research will be chosen in order to fulfill the PhD candidate’s wishesand skills.
REQUIREMENTS
Applicants are required to have a recent Ms degree in Civil Engineering. Preference will be given to applicants with a specialization in geotechnical engineering. Successful applicant is expected to have scientific research skills and high motivation to fulfill the requirements of the doctoral program. Applicants should have outstanding communications skills and a teamwork attitude. Fluency in spoken and written English is highly advantageous.
The successful applicant will be a part of the Laboratory of Soil Mechanics (LMS) providing excellent facilities and competitive salary (55’000 CHF/ year). The EPFL offers an outstanding international working environment along with training and development opportunities. Personal initiative and independent research tasks related with the candidate’s interests will be encouraged.
Other activities will include interaction with Ms students and participation in teaching. APPLICATIONS The position is open and will start upon agreement. Suitable, highly-motivated candidates should send an electronic application (including a cover letter describing interests and qualifications and a CV, as a single PDF) to recruitment.lms@epfl.ch .
Applicant selection will be performed on the basis of the excellence of the CV. Selected candidates will be then invited for an interview at the EPFL.
