3D nanoprinted cell scaffolds for oxygen and pH sensing at the Radacsi Research Group, University of Edinburgh

Fully funded PhD studentship available on the topic 3D optically responsive nanostructured cell scaffolds. This will be a four-year PhD within the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Intelligent Sensing and Measurement.

Project Overview

The candidate will synthesize and characterize optical nanostructures for monitoring clinically relevant bio-markers and will fabricate 3D nanostructures (3D nanoprinting). Selected candidate will also integrate optical probes within cell scaffolds to assess in vitro sensor performance and how to work with cell cultures.

Within the project, the selected candidate will use state-of-the-art characterization techniques. Part of the work will be carried out at the material research institute Empa in St. Gallen (Switzerland) (ETH domain). He / she will work with our prototype 3D nanoprinter, make solutions and hydrogels, use cell cultures and microscopes (SEM, confocal, fluorescent, etc.)

Requirements / Qualifications

  1. Experience with cell cultures and/or nanotechnology is required.
  2. Minimum entry qualification – a First Class degree (or International equivalent) in materials science, chemical engineering or physics discipline, possibly supported by an MSc degree.
  3. Experience in nanotechnology and their characterization techniques is a plus, but not essential. Experience with CAD software is essential.

Note: Self-funded candidates from all over the world are also encouraged to apply.

Deadline: Friday, February 15, 2019

Funding: EPSRC funded. Tuition fees and stipend available for Home students or EU students who have been resident in the UK for three years.
