PhD position: Environmental Exposure Science 1618 views

The Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute (Swiss TPH), associated with the University of Basel is inviting applications for a PhD position in Environmental Exposure Science within the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health (EPH). The Unit “Environmental Exposures and Health” (EEH) is focused on research related to the many environmental exposures: including air pollution, noise, electromagnetic fields, heatwaves, green space and airborne pollen.

About the position:
  • The PhD project “Spatiotemporal modelling of exposure to airborne pollen and its effects on cardiorespiratory health” is funded by the European Research Council.
  • It aims to model the day-to-day and geographic variations of pollen in different climatic regions of Switzerland.
  • The selected candidate will use these models to estimate people’s exposure to airborne pollen for subsequent epidemiological research into a diversity of health effects.
  • During the modelling process, he/she will work with measured pollen concentrations (through a collaboration with MeteoSwiss), weather data, geographic datasets and satellite observations to improve pollen exposure mapping for applications in epidemiology and forecasting.
  • The PhD candidate will be joining a multidisciplinary research team focusing on exposure modelling, data science, environmental epidemiology, and practical measurement studies.

Requirements:

  • Applicant must hold Master degree level in Data Science, Statistics, Geographic Information Sciences, Geography, Quantitative Epidemiology or a similar field.
  • Good knowledge of programming, data management methods, and quantitative analytical methods (preferably R, python)
  • Experience in processing and managing big datasets and with using geographic analysis systems (ArcMap, QGIS, R) would be an asset
  • Broad interest in environment and health research and excellent command of English (speaking and writing)

Duration: The PhD position will be for a period of four years.

Starting date: 1 May 2020 onwards

Applications:

Apply online (in English) including:
