The Faculty of Science at University of Basel is inviting applications for a PhD position in Atmospheric Sciences.

About the position:
  • A PhD studentship is available to characterize in detail the chemical composition of aerosols.
  • The PhD project will combine atmospheric chemistry, organic synthesis, chemical analysis, statistical techniques, and interdisciplinary collaboration to investigate the composition and toxicity of atmospheric particulate matter, with a focus on oxidising molecules, including organic peroxides.
  • The selected candidate will gain hands-on experience with gas and liquid chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry and DAD/fluorescence detection, in-depth data analysis skills to fully explore and visualize results, and work both autonomously and directly with other group members and external collaborators.

Requirements:

  • Applicants must possess an academic qualification (good undergraduate or master’s degree) in chemistry or a related field, and should ideally have experience with organic synthetic chemistry and analytical techniques (LC/GC, mass spectrometry), basic ability in programming and statistical analysis.
  • Applicant to have understanding of atmospheric processes and/or toxicology would be an advantage.
  • Applicant must possess good level of English, excellent communication skills and a willingness to collaborate are essential.
  • The applicant will also need strong motivation, perseverance, initiative and creative problem-solving to tackle some of the most pressing questions in the field.

Funding: project is funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation for four years.
