The Chair of Earth Observation and Remote Sensing, Institute of Environmental Engineering, Swiss Federal Institute of Technology – ETH Zurich has an open PhD student position from summer/autumn 2019 for a research project on differential SAR interferometry for landslides monitoring.
About the research:
- The research focuses on investigating generic methods and algorithms in the context of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging and differential SAR interferometry. SAR interferometry-based measurements of ground displacements using time-series of spaceborne SAR data and, more recently, also using ground-based radar devices is an emerging technology that supports applications such as:
- monitoring of critical areas to better assess geohazards (e.g., in alpine areas),
- measurement of subsidence (mm/cm scale over years) due to groundwater/oil/coal extraction,
- monitoring of slopes in open pit mines, etc.
Requirements:
- Applicant must be highly motivated candidate holding a master’s degree or a diploma in Electrical Engineering, Geomatics Engineering, Geophysics, Physics or a related field.
- Applicant must have a background in digital signal processing and/or image processing. Some experience in SAR data processing or another field of array signal processing is an asset.
- Applicant must possess strong analytical skills and programming experience in Matlab, Python, C/C++, or equivalent, and is able and/or eager to develop and implement signal-processing algorithms in such a programming language.
- Applicant must have fluency in English (oral and written), and essentially candidate must be willing to work in a multidisciplinary and international research team.
- Applicants should hold a valid driver’s license (European Cat. B).
Applications:
- Apply via the online application system including the following:
- Cover letter that describes the candidate’s motivation and research experience
- Full CV
- Academic transcripts/list of courses completed or on-going, including grades
- Digital copy (PDF) of the master’s thesis
- Name and address/contact details of two referees.
- Address application to Ms. Corina Niescher, Human Resources.
