PhD position in History at University of Basel 668 views

The Department of History at the University of Basel invites applications for a four-year PhD position in History. The position is expected to commence in May, 2019. This is a 100%, fixed term, four years position. The Project is “Voicing the News, Voicing History. Songs, Ballads and Broadsheets as Vocal Media in Early Modern Germany and Switzerland”.

About the position:
  • The successful candidate will be member of the research group “Vocal Power. Vocality in Early Modern Media and Politics”, funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation and directed by Prof. Dr. Jan-Friedrich Missfelder.
  • The project explores the political, cultural and social functions of voice in 17th and 18th century politics, society and media practices in the German speaking lands.
  • It particularly investigates the role songs and ballads had to play in the establishment of an early modern media landscape and the vocal agency of street singers, heralds, town criers, orators and preachers as in the process of shaping the early modern public sphere.
  • The selected candidate will be pursuing an individual research project on the representation of news and actualities and, respectively, the construction of history in songs and ballad broadsheets.

Requirements:

  • Applicant must hold a university degree (MA or equivalent) in History (or a related discipline).
  • Good knowledge of German and English is expected
  • Experiences in the field of early modern history are essential. Interest in early modern media and communication history is a plus but not a necessary requirement.
