PhD position in Particle Physics (ATLAS experiment at the LHC) 1043 views

The Particle Physics section of the Norwegian centre (University of Oslo (UiO)) for CERN research seeks an excellent and very motivated candidate expected to perform research work within the ATLAS experiment at CERN’s “Large Hadron Collider” (LHC). A position as PhD Research fellow in Particle Physics is available at The Department of Physics. The PhD position is of 3 years duration. Starting date is as soon as possible or no later than 01.10.2021.

About the position:
  • The candidate is expected to take responsibilities within software and computing, as part of the necessary ATLAS service work leading to qualification to be author of ATLAS publications.
  • She/he will participate in shift work to monitor ATLAS data taking and/or the computing infrastructure. Once it is allowed to travel abroad, frequent stays at CERN are encouraged.
  • The candidate is expected to stay one-year at CERN and work closely with other ATLAS PhD students and experts, with the aim to make strong contributions to new computational and analysis methods and apply them to searches for new physics phenomena.

Requirements:

  • Applicants must hold a Master’s degree or equivalent in detector physics, high-energy experimental nuclear or particle physics, or a related discipline. Foreign completed degrees (at M.Sc. level) must correspond to a minimum of four years in the Norwegian educational system.
  • Candidate is expected to have good social and collaboration skills and ability to work independently and in an interdisciplinary scientific environment
  • Solid background in scientific programming (C++, Python).
  • Experience in data analysis, use of advanced statistical tools and methods, as well as machine learning algorithms.
  • Candidates without a Master’s degree have until 15 August 2021 to complete the final exam.
