This project will focus on computational studies of actinide (U, Np, Pu) uptake onto key environmentally important mineral phases. The approach adopted is based on a technique known as the periodic electrostatic embedded cluster method (PEECM), in which the adsorbing actinide and a small part of the mineral surface are simulated using a quantum chemical method, while the long-range electrostatic effects of the bulk mineral are treated as an infinite array of point charges. Full training will be provided in high performance computing and the PEECM.
