Postdoc in Computational Ecosystem Science 819 views

Within the project MIND – Next-generation modelling of the biosphere: Including new data streams and optimality approaches, a Postdoc in Computational Ecosystem Science for autumn 2019 is vacant and applications are invited for the same.

About the position:
  • The position is available in Computational Ecosystem Science group that develops new model and data integration approaches to gain a mechanistic understanding of biogeochemical cycling in ecosystems, water-carbon coupling, and forest responses to climate change.
  • Then group is co-hosted at the ETH Institute of Agricultural Sciences and the WSL Unit Forest Dynamics and work at the intersection of Earth system science, ecophysiology, ecology, applied statistics, and high-performance computing.
  • The selected candidate will leverage large forest inventory datasets and combine these in a Bayesian framework with a next-generation process-based Vegetation Demography Model to investigate forest dynamics in response to environmental change and interactions of ecosystem processes across scales.
  • This work will lay the foundation for an Ecological Forecasting system in Swiss forests, using an extended diversity of observations.

Requirements:

  • The candidate is expected to be independent and creative thinking to find innovative solutions to a high-profile scientific challenge with a clear path to applications for designing forest management and achieving climate change resilience.
  • Candidate must hold a PhD degree in a relevant area.
  • Demonstrated experience with Bayesian statistical methods and forest dynamics modelling is highly desirable and excellent skills in informatics (Fortran, R, Python, High Performance Computing, Git) and statistics are required.
  • A collaborative work mentality for the development of our computational infrastructure is expected
  • Candidate must possess proficiency in English.

Applications:

  • Apply online before including the following documents:
  • An application letter (max. 2 pages, with a statement of research interests and relevant experience)
  • CV and a list of publications
  • Copies of academic qualifications
  • The names and e-mail addresses of three referees.
