Postdoc in Postdoc in Biological Soft Matter, Protein Biophysics, Biophysical Chemistry 1103 views

Overview:

  • Crystallization of water into ice is lethal to most organisms and detrimental to many soft materials.
  • Freeze-avoidant fish living in polar seas evolved to tackle this problem with an unusual coping strategy.

About the position:

  1. They produce ‘antifreeze’ proteins that block the growth of embryonic ice crystals within a narrow temperature range known as the ‘thermal hysteresis gap’ enabling survival under extreme conditions.
  2. Our aim is to unravel how ice-binding proteins work and to better understand the functionality of bio mimetic and biosynthetic antifreezes to custom-tailor these for biomedical application
  3. In this project you will study recently developed biosynthetic protein-polymers which inhibit ice recrystallization and engineer optimized materials based on your findings.
  4. You will work in close collaboration with other group members who study bio inspired macromolecular antifreezes and use super-resolution imaging to measure ice-binding at the single molecule level.

Eligibility criteria:

  • The successful applicant has experience with quantitative microscopy, (computer-aided) protein engineering, and protein biophysics; knowledge of crystallization and micro fluidics is preferred.
  • The applicant is expected to disseminate the results through high-impact publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at international conferences
  • We seek highly talented, self-motivated, and enthusiastic applicants with a PhD degree in Biological Soft Matter, Protein Biophysics, Biophysical Chemistry, or Molecular Life Sciences.
  • Furthermore, good communication skills, fluency in English, and a strong motivation to do original, fundamental research in an interdisciplinary team are essential.

How to apply:

  1. We invite you to submit a complete application by using the ‘apply now’-button on this page.
  2. To ensure consideration, your application should include the following documents (in PDF format):
  • An application letter that outlines your qualification, interest and motivation for this position
  1. A CV with details on education, employment, publications, and research experience, as well as contact information for at least two referees.
  2. We look forward to your application and will screen it as soon as we have received it. Screening will continue until the position has been filled.
