Overview
The candidate will focus on developing a biocatalytic tool box to enable the chemo-enzymatic synthesis of glycans that contain natural and modified monosaccharides for application in glycan microarrays, and will involve molecular biology, scale up protein expression and purification and biochemical assay development.
Selected candidate will carry out research and will focus on developing a biocatalytic tool box to enable the chemo-enzymatic synthesis of glycans that contain natural and modified monosaccharides for application in glycan microarrays. Funding: This position is funded as part of a consortium project so you require the ability to work both independently and as part of a larger team with members across other labs in the UK.
Qualification
- First degree in Chemistry or Biochemistry
- PhD in biochemical glycoscience
- Knowledge and experience of molecular cloning, recombinant protein expression in E. coli and protein purification and biochemical assays for the functional characterisation of glycoenzymes, including those active on galactose and nonulosonic acids
- Demonstrable interest/experience in carbohydrate biochemistry, protein mass spectrometry, glycosyltransferases and bacterial glycans.
- Excellent communication skills t, both orally and in writing, using a range of media including publication in journals and delivery of presentations at conferences or exhibiting work.
