SCDTP Studentship – Understanding our 3D world

A Ph.D. studentship is available to work in Professor Wendy Adams’ lab on the visual perception of 3D scenes in the real world and virtual reality.

  1. This project investigates the visual information that humans use to understand the structure and gist of complex natural scenes – allowing us to interact with objects and people in our environment.
  2. The project will use a combination of lab-based studies with human observers, and computational modeling. The ideal candidate will have some experience of research with human participants, and an interest in evaluating theories of visual perception.

Skills Required

Basic programming skills (e.g. Matlab), good quantitative skills (for modeling of data, stimulus generation), the experience of research with human subjects.

Funding

  1. South Coast DTP Funding provides an annual maintenance grant (tax-free) of £15,009 (2019/20 UKRI rate),
  2. plus payment of all program fees.
  3. Other funding available for SCDTP funded students can be found on the SCDTP website (southcoastdtp.ac.uk).
  4. Funding is provided for 3 years of full-time Ph.D. study (pro-rata for part-time students).
  5. Applications for 1+3 funding for students completing a Master’s year prior to the commencement of Ph.D. study are also welcome (details available at southcoastdtp.ac.uk).
