The Sigma Xi Grants-in-Aid of Research (GIAR) program has provided Bachelor’s and Master’s students with valuable educational experiences.
Benefits:
- The program awards grants of up to $1,000 to students from all areas of the sciences and engineering.
- Designated funds from the National Academy of Sciences allow for grants of up to $5,000 for astronomy research and $2,500 for vision related research.
- Students use the funding to pay for travel expenses to and from a research site, or for purchase of non-standard laboratory equipment necessary to complete a specific research project.
Eligibility:
- Applications are invited from all over the world (International), US Citizenship and residence not required.
- Applicant must be an undergraduate and/or graduate student currently enrolled in degree seeking programs may apply.
- Undergraduate applicant who is graduating seniors must plan to complete their research prior to graduation.
- Applicants looking for a second Grant-in-Aid of Research must submit a Follow-up Report Form prior to the application deadline for a new grant.
- Total of two Grants-in-Aid of Research may be availed by an applicant.
- In case of joint project, separate applications are accepted on the same project.
- Each applicant must show how his/her work is a unique contribution to the larger project.
Deadlines:
- March 15: Application form available online January 15; funding decisions announced by e-mail in early May
- October 1: Application form available online August 1; funding decisions announced by e-mail in mid-December
