The national foundation for investment in scientific and engineering research is popularly referred to as SFI. It stands for Science Foundation Ireland (SFI).

It funds research in the STEM areas and also promotes and assists the development and competitiveness of industry, enterprise and employment in Ireland.

SFI Centres are inviting applications for the training of PhD and research masters students in areas of identified skills needs.

Scope of training: The training studentship would involve development of innovative

  • software and
  • hardware-based information and
  • communications technologies (ICT) as well as
  • the diffusion of ICT as a key enabling technology in other application areas of science and technology.

Level of study: Training for PhD and Research Masters students

Subject Area: Training will be provided in the areas of identified skills needs.

Scholarship Value: Science Foundation Ireland, SFI, will fund a maximum of 80% of students, with applicants being required to secure funding for the remaining 20% from enterprise, philanthropic, public or institutional sources.

Number of Scholarships: A total of approximately 120 students would be funded by each SFI Research Centre over its lifetime. The intake each year would be of approximately 30 students.

Nationality: International students can apply

Eligibility Criteria: 

  • Evidence of proficiency in English would be required from candidates whose first language is not English.
  • Applications to the programme will be led by groups of academic researchers.
  • The groups would consist of internationally recognised experts in an area with access to cutting-edge infrastructure.
  • Applicants must associate closely with enterprise partners in the design and delivery of an innovative programme of training that will be relevant to the needs of the workforce of the future.
  • Centres can partner with both Irish and international companies (SMEs and MNCs).
  • There is no requirement for the partner to have an operating base in Ireland.

How to Apply:  Science Foundation Ireland would accept applications by the academic leadership and would be further on evaluated by international peer review.
