UCLA-BMSB Ph.D. PROGRAM

The Biochemistry, Molecular and Structural Biology (BMSB) Graduate Program at UCLA offers an established tradition of excellence in research and PhD student training.

Our faculty’s cutting-edge research programs covers the broad areas of biochemistry and molecular biology, including both traditional and modern disciplines.

Our program is well suited for students interested in biological systems and molecules, particularly those who seek a detailed, mechanistic understanding of biological and biochemical phenomena.

How to Apply

The procedure to apply for the PhD program by US Citizen and International students are demonstrated below

US DOMESTIC STUDENTS

Step 1:  Complete the UCLA Graduate Application.

  • The Application Fee is $80 for U.S. citizens and Permanent Residents.

Step 2:  Upload and input the following to the UCLA application:

  • Statement of Purpose
  • Three Letters of Recommendation

Input the name and email address of each recommender. UCLA will send an automated email with instructions to your recommender. Your recommender will have the opportunity to complete the evaluation online and upload his/her letter.

Step 3:  Submit all supplementary materials to the Graduate Office:

  • Official GRE Score
    • GRE Codes:
      • UCLA – R4837
      • General Chemistry – 0301
      • Biochemistry – 0202
    • One (1) Official Transcript
      • UCLA undergraduates may submit unoffical transcripts

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

Step 1:  Complete the UCLA Graduate Application.

  • The Application Fee is $100 for international applicants.

  • Official General and Subject GRE Score
    • GRE Codes:

      • General Chemistry – 0301
      • Biochemistry – 0202
    • English Requirement (submit one from below):
      • Official TOEFL score of at least 560 on the paper exam or 220 on the computer exam
      • Official TOEFL iBT score of at least 87
      • Official IELTS overall band score of at least 7.0
    • Two (2) Official Transcripts
      • One copy in English and one copy in the language of instruction is required
