A Postdoctoral positions is available in “Machine Learning and Data Mining on Biomedical Data” at the Department of Biosystems Science and Engineering (D-BSSE). This department is one of ETH Zurich’s youngest departments and the only one located in Basel outside of the Zurich campus. It unites biologists, engineers, computer scientists, and mathematicians to work towards a quantitative understanding and purposeful engineering of complex biological systems.

Prof. Karsten Borgwardt’s Lab is interested in the development and application of machine learning and data mining algorithms for biomedical data analysis. Alumni of the lab now hold positions which reach from faculty positions in mathematics to faculty positions in bioinformatics, which reflects the spectrum of research activities in the lab. It is the coordinating node of the European Marie Curie Initial Training Network for “Machine Learning for Personalized Medicine” with 12 partner labs in 8 countries. Furthermore, the lab is supported by the Krupp Award for Young Professors 2013 and a Starting Grant from the ERC backup scheme of the SNSF.

Who can apply: Applicants should be highly motivated and creative, show an exceptional track record, and hold a Ph.D. degree in Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Mathematics, Statistics, or related fields, and be interested in working in an interdisciplinary environment at the interface of Machine Learning and Biomedicine, in particular, in algorithm development for large-scale data analysis problems in biology and medicine. Positions for both postdocs who just obtained their Ph.D. degree and for researchers with several years of postdoctoral experience are available. These positions offer the opportunity to gain leadership and supervision experience in joint projects with younger scientists.

How to apply: please submit a complete application that should include:

(1) your CV,

(2) university transcripts, and

(3) the coordinates of at least two referees.

In addition, please submit (4) a letter of motivation (up to 2 pages long), in which you describe your motivation to join the lab and in which you explain which publications of the lab you are most interested in and why. The selection process will start on May 31, but applications arriving after this date will be considered as well (with a final deadline of June 30, 2015). We plan to inform candidates about the outcome of their application within 3 months from submission. Candidates who receive an offer should start their position in 2015. Only complete applications will be considered.

Please submit your application through the ETH Online System (by following the link “Apply now” below) to “ETH Zurich, Mr. Thomas Koenitzer, Human Resources, CH-8093 Zurich”.
