Chemistry PhD Position Max Planck Institute 2683 views

The Max Planck Research Group of Synergistic Organometallic Catalysis at the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Energy Conversion is currently looking for a highly motivated doctoral candidate (m/f/d) with a solid background in synthetic organometallic chemistry and catalysis in cooperation with the Ruhr University Bochum.

  1. Aims of Ph.D. project is design and develop synergistic transition-metal based catalytic systems capable of using green energy as a promotor to activate small molecules relevant in energy research.
  2. The candidate will synthesize and study new molecular complexes that are predicted to activate thermodynamically stable building-blocks for the efficient and sustainable formation of C–C, C-N, C-O bonds.
  3. Another important facet of the project will be the direct investigation of reactive intermediates that are the keys to understanding bond making and breaking reactions allowing for further optimization of the catalytic cycles.

Qualifications and personal qualities:

  1. Applicants must hold a master’s degree in chemistry or a related subject.
  2. Candidates must show solid background in fundamental organometallic chemistry, with emphasis on synthetic aspects.
  3. Experience in the handling of air-sensitive and thermally labile organometallic compounds is desired.
  4. Experience with standard structural characterization techniques such as NMR, X-ray diffractometry, and mass spectrometry is required.
  5. Experience with IR, UV-vis spectroscopy, GC, GC-MS, Photochemistry is an advantage.
  6. Excellent English-language proficiency (verbal and written).
  7. Self-motivated personality with an independent, target-oriented, and systematic working style. A high degree of creativity and flexibility, as well as excellent collaborative skills.
  8. The successful candidate will be integrated into an interdisciplinary and international group jointly between the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Energy Conversion and the Ruhr University Bochum. The salary is based on the Collective Agreement for German Public Service (TVöD-Bund).
  9. The Max Planck Society explicitly encourages applications from women and qualified people with disabilities.
