The Max Planck Institute for the Study of Religious and Ethnic Diversity is offering Doctoral and Postdoctoral Research and Writing Fellowships (f/m/d).
About the project:
- The positions are available in Department of Ethics, Law and Politics, under the direction of Prof. Dr. Ayelet Shachar.
- Applicants should have substantive legal, empirical, or normative expertise in one or more of the following fields: citizenship, migration, technology and the regulation of global mobility regimes, comparative constitutional law, or the study of cultural or religious diversity.
- The focus is on cutting-edge legal and theoretical puzzles. An excellent track record and promising research agenda are required.
- Candidates with advanced degrees in political science, law, philosophy, geography, sociology, global affairs and international relations will have advantage.
- The duration of the in-residence fellowship position will be up to 12 months.
- Starting date is 1 September 2020 or 1 October 2020

- The transformation of citizenship
- Legal construction of borders and membership boundaries
- Highly skilled migration and citizenship by investment
- State and religion in comparative and transnational perspectives
- Gender equality in pluralistic legal systems
- Technology, AI, and migration regulation
Requirements:
- The fellowships are open to all regardless of citizenship.
For Postdoctoral position:
- Applications for the postdoctoral research fellowship must be submitted in English and include a cover letter describing the intersection of your work with the department’s research themes (up to 500 words), a list of publications and CV, a sample of writing in English (written or published within the past two years), a writing plan/research proposal for the project you wish to undertake during the period of the postdoctoral fellowship (up to 1000 words), and two letters of recommendation written by scholars who are familiar with your work.
- Applicants should also send a record of university diplomas and transcripts.
For doctoral position:
- Applicants for the doctoral research fellowship must be at an advanced stage of writing their dissertation.
- Submit (in English) a cover letter describing the intersection of your work with the department’s research themes (up to 500 words), a list of publications and CV, a sample of writing in English (written or published within the past two years), a summary of your PhD project (up to 1000 words), and two letters of recommendation (one of these reference letters must be from your PhD supervisor, indicating his/her support for your research stay at the Institute).
