The School of History, Classics and Archaeology, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at Newcastle University invites applications for MSCA ITN Early Stage Researcher under the project “Citizen Science methods for collaborative mapping of heritage values”. This post is funded by the European Commission as part of a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Innovative Training Network on ‘Cultural Heritage and the Planning of European Landscapes (HERILAND)’.

Duration: full-time; 36 months

Start date: planned to be October 2019

About the position:

The successful candidate will pursue the following objectives:

  • to analyse the related Global Development Goal 11 to determine how heritage can be incorporated in the indicators for the Goal and/ or how the relationship with heritage can be mapped;
  • to determine which INSPIRE geo-datasets (available across Europe) can help in assessing the indicators;
  • to collect citizen data, grounded in citizen science methods (including through collaborative mapping, social media analysis, etc.) that complements the available government data;
  • to integrate the government and citizen data for several case studies to systematically assess the contribution of heritage to sustainable development.

Requirements:

  • Early-Stage Researchers (ESRs) shall at the time of recruitment by the host organization be in the first four years (full-time equivalent research experience) of their research careers and not yet have been awarded a doctoral degree.
  • At the time of recruitment by the host organisation, researchers must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of their host organization for more than 12 months in the three years immediately prior to the recruitment date.
  • A postgradaute Master’s degree (or equivalent) in a relevant heritage-related field, e.g. geography, archaeology, planning, landscape architecture, heritage studies, economics, sociology, information technology, computer science
  • High level of proficiency in English language
  • Relevant IT skills (e.g. coding for mobile applications, collaborative mapping, social media analyses)
