PhD student in the field of Chemistry / Pharmaceutical / Medical Technology at the Clay Sorption Mechanism Group of the Waste Management Laboratory, Paul Scherrer Institute Switzerland (PSI)- Mittelland (SO, AG).

PSI is the largest research institute for natural and engineering sciences in Switzerland. We perform cutting-edge research in the fields of matter and materials, energy and environment and human health.

Tasks Involved

Selected candidate will investigate the interaction between redox-sensitive radionuclides (eg, U, Tc, or Se), and purified Fe (II) / (III) -containing clay minerals by combining different approaches:

1. adsorption experiments with radionuclides under different relevant geochemical conditions,
2. molecular scale speciation using X-ray absorption spectroscopy and
3. adsorption modeling.

The aim is to correlate mineral properties with respect to its redox reactive iron content to the degree of radionuclide retention and molecular scale surface speciation. X-Ray absorption spectroscopic measurements at the Rossendorf Beamline (ROBL) located at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) in Grenoble (France) and at the Radiochemical A-type laboratory to evaluate and model your data.

Requirements

1. Highly motivated individual with good communication skills in English and easily adaptable to different working environments.
2. Master degree / Diploma in chemistry, earth or environmental sciences or related field.
3. X-ray absorption spectroscopy. In electrochemistry or in synchrotron-based X-ray absorption spectroscopy.
