European Molecular Biology Laboratory invites applications for a postdoctoral fellow in the research group of Matthias Wilmanns. He has a long-standing record in structural biology on research themes of medical relevance. The main research interest is on structures of large protein translocation systems and the investigation of molecular parameters leading to elastic properties in giant muscle proteins.
Duration: 2 years
Role and responsibilities:
- The development of novel therapeutic strategies is essential to combat the highly infectious pathogen Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb).
- The aim of this project is to structurally and functionally characterize a new toxin-antitoxin system (TA) with bactericidal activity in Mtb, to reach an in-depth mechanistic understanding of the toxin activity and molecular parameters that modulate the TA assembly.
- Together with an industrial partner, we will use this knowledge to chemically trigger the disassembly of the cidal toxin from its inactivating protein antidote using small molecule interference.
- The project provides a unique opportunity for you to work in a private/public partnership between academia and industry.
Requirements:
- Applicants should have a PhD in a relevant field, proven record of scientific accomplishments, international experience, scientific ambition
- Excellent communication skills
- Project coordination and previously demonstrated expertise in X-ray crystallography, biochemistry and biophysical approaches including sample preparation (molecular biology, heterologous expression, protein purification).
