The International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid-Tropics (ICRISAT) invites applications from dynamic and highly innovative Legume/Cereal Pathologist and Market Economist.
The two positions will work on separate projects viz., Legume/Cereal Pathologist will work on cereals (sorghum and pearl millet) and legumes (groundnut) in a multi-disciplinary team comprising both biological and social scientists. Market Economist will undertake applied market and institutional research in sub-Saharan Africa in relation to improving the productivity and market competitiveness of cereal and legume crops in collaboration with a team of economists and bio-physical scientists
Senior Scientist/Scientist – Legume/Cereal Pathology (West and Central Africa)
Responsibilities:
- Plan and execute research on regionally important diseases of cereals (sorghum and pearl millet) and legumes (groundnut) to address the knowledge gaps in epidemiology, pathogenic variability, host plant resistance and alternative disease management strategies.
- Develop disease management strategies
- Work with crop improvement scientists to develop improved cultivars with resistance to major disease in the region Organize and conduct multi-location disease nurseries.
- Organize and conduct on-farm trials and training to partner scientists and extension workers on integrated disease management.
- Analyse, summarize and interpret the data of the experiments conducted in laboratory, greenhouse and on station and on-farm trials.
- Prepare reports and research papers for publication in the reputed journals.
- Develop project proposal for donor funding.
Requirements:
- Applicant must hold PhD in Plant Pathology with 5 to 10 years of post-doctoral experience as a plant pathologist at a research institute/university/private sector company.
Senior Scientist/Scientist – Market Economics (West and Central Africa)
Responsibilities:
- Deepened understanding of the key constraints limiting smallholder participation to inputs and product markets and identify factors explaining market dynamics for agricultural crops for ICRISAT mandate regions
- Undertake value chain analyses of products and commodities and identify options for value chain upgrading to can be piloted
- Identify policy and institutional options and decision tools for better targeting food security and market oriented development environments
- Carry out a set of pilot market and linkage experiments using new methods
- Prepare research reports, seminar papers and other scientific manuscripts for the dissemination of research results and take initiative in developing project proposals and publish research findings in peer-reviewed journal and contribute to enhancing research impacts
- Contribute to ICRISAT’s capacity building efforts in the area of markets, policy analysis and institution building
Requirements:
- Applicant must hold PhD in Agricultural marketing, Agribusiness or Development Economics, with relevant post-doctoral experience of 3 to 7 years.
