The Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence (SIR) Program: It assists U.S. higher education / research institutions in expanding programs of academic international exchange. It supports non-U.S. candidates through grants for teaching at institutions that require a strong international component benefiting both the U.S. institution and the selected scholar.

SIR – Scholar-in-Residence Fulbright Program: For few Fulbright programs serves institutions, S-I-R gives preference to the following:

  • Historically Black Colleges and Universities,
  • Tribal Colleges and Universities,
  • Hispanic-serving institutions,
  • Community colleges,
  • Small, liberal arts institutions,
  • AANAPISI and American Indian and Alaskan Native
  • Asian-American and Native American/Pacific Islander-Serving Institutions
  • AIANSIs and Predominantly Black Institutions- PBIs.

There are many opportunities for other institutions to partner with the preference organizations.

Eligibility: Any accredited U.S. institution of higher learning, although preference is given to Minority Serving Institutions or small liberal arts colleges and other community colleges

 Financial Support: Grant benefits for the Fulbright S-I-R scholarship include:

  • Roundtrip international air travel,
  • Monthly stipend,
  • Allowance for up to 2 dependents,
  • Initial settling in and professional allowances.

Host institutions are encouraged to provide some cost-sharing, such as a supplement salary for the candidate or in-kind support, such other expenses like, housing, meals and /or travel.

 Grant Duration period: A semester to full academic year.
