Space Radiation Environment Scientist 1704 views

The Faculty of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) at The Open University is seeking a Space Radiation Environment Scientist to work across a wide range of space missions in the Centre for Electronic Imaging (CEI), including the Soft X-ray Imager (SXI) for the European Space Agency (ESA) and Chinese Academy of Sciences SMILE mission, the SXI on the THESEUS mission concept, the Wide Field Imager for the ESA ATHENA mission, the ESA EUCLID VIS instrument, as well as the ESA JUICE mission and NASA’s WFIRST mission.

Tasks and Responsibilities:

• Working in several small teams across the CEI, engaging in many aspects of radiation environment modelling, including the use of GEANT4, ESA software tools and other bespoke software.
• Analysis of orbital data from space missions to develop a deeper understanding of the environment in which new missions will orbit, including Solar Energetic Particle (SEP) events.
• Modelling and simulations of detectors within space telescopes as well as new optics technologies and their impact on the radiation damage at the focal plane.
• Presentation of your results at European consortium meetings and workshops, alongside presentations and publications at international conferences.

Requirements:

• Applicant must hold a PhD in Physics, Astronomy or a closely related subject, or equivalent experience in industry.
• Applicant will have excellent programming skills and experience with analysing complex data.
